Data sets

Genetics data sets to download

The data the genetics calculator runs on is yours to take: one file per species, with every gene, locus and combo morph. Made for everyone who would rather not type their genetics in by hand.

⚠️ Honestly

This data is validated as well as I can, but with no claim to correctness. It comes from research and cross-checking several sources, not from a lab. Only the corn snake data set is expert-checked – the other 14 species are research drafts and are marked under review. If you base a pairing on them, check them twice.

How it works

Three steps into the app

⬇️

1. Download the file

Tap the tile of the species you want. The file goes to your downloads – one file per species, the same one for every language.

📱

2. Open it in DragonSphere

Tap the file and pick DragonSphere, or choose it inside the app under Import.

3. Review and take it over

The app shows you what is coming in. Species you already have are extended, nothing is overwritten or renamed.

🐉 What this is for

The files are made for the genetics import of my app DragonSphere (iPhone and iPad). You do not need them to use the calculator on this site – that one runs without any download.

Pick one

All 15 species

One tile = one species = one file.

Validated

Corn Snake

Pantherophis guttatus

Cross-checked research – the only expert-validated data set.

Ball Python

Python regius

The largest data set; the sex-linked Banana is skipped on import.

47 genes · 13 combo morphs

Under review

Leopard Gecko

Eublepharis macularius

Clearly Mendelian genes only; polygenic lines such as Tangerine or Hypo are left out.

16 genes · 2 combo morphs

Boa

Boa constrictor

For several pattern genes the inheritance is disputed in the hobby.

15 genes · 5 combo morphs

Western Hognose

Heterodon nasicus

Heavily recessive; only Anaconda and Arctic have a viable super form.

12 genes · 8 combo morphs

Bearded Dragon

Pogona vitticeps

All coloration is polygenic and therefore not included.

8 genes · 5 combo morphs

Kingsnakes & Milksnakes

Lampropeltis spp.

Several species in one set; the morphs are species-specific and not cross-compatible.

12 genes · 6 combo morphs

Carpet Python

Morelia spilota

A small Mendelian core without localities; the Jaguar super form is lethal.

7 genes · 6 combo morphs

African Fat-tailed Gecko

Hemitheconyx caudicinctus

Breeder consensus from test breedings, no peer-reviewed molecular genetics.

10 genes · 3 combo morphs

Kenyan Sand Boa

Eryx colubrinus

Only the two robustly proven recessives plus the snow combination; paradox and hybrid looks stay out.

Garter Snake

Thamnophis sirtalis

Melanism is peer-reviewed; T- and T+ albino sit on different loci.

6 genes · 4 combo morphs

Reticulated Python

Malayopython reticulatus

Barely studied molecularly; allelism rests on breeder consensus.

12 genes · 2 combo morphs

Burmese Python

Python bivittatus

Inheritance from test breedings; albino and caramel share one locus.

6 genes · 7 combo morphs

Creamsicle (hybrid)

P. guttatus × P. emoryi

Hybrid line: only amel can be calculated, the creamy background is polygenic.

Rootbeer / Turbo (hybrid)

P. guttatus × Ratsnake

Hybrid line: only the discrete corn alleles amel and hypo can be calculated.

What is inside a file

Each file holds the species, its genes with inheritance type and, where known, the locus, and the combo morphs they produce. Known alternative names, super forms and welfare notes sit as a short text on the gene itself.

Which name the species arrives under: the file carries the scientific name – so the corn snake enters the app as Pantherophis guttatus. For the two hybrid lines and for the kingsnakes and milksnakes it is the scientific collective term — Lampropeltis spp., P. guttatus × P. emoryi, P. guttatus × Ratsnake. The German and English names travel inside the same file; the app does not use them yet. Worth knowing if you had already created the species yourself: you will then have it twice – once under your own name, once under the scientific one. You can delete whichever you do not want to keep. As long as a deleted species sits in the app's trash, it is skipped on a repeated import — the app says so in the preview.

Not included: polygenic and line-bred traits – they cannot be calculated the Mendelian way and are therefore in neither the calculator nor the file. For the ball python, the sex-linked Banana is skipped on import: sex linkage cannot be represented in the app right now, and half a truth would be worse than none.

The identifiers inside the files stay the same across releases. Download a species again later and it will not show up twice – it extends the entry you already have. For a species you already have, the import switches structured genetics on — your own entries stay untouched. Corrections to a species you have already imported have to be followed up inside the app yourself.

Feedback

Spotted a mistake? Missing a species?

These data sets live on feedback. If something looks wrong in a species or an inheritance type, if you have a correction, or if a species you keep is missing here: write to me. Every report gets picked up and worked in.
